Ankita Raina, who was playing her first Olympics, was paired with Sania Mirza. The pair lost to twin sisters Nadia and Lyudmila Kichenok of Ukraine in the women’s doubles opening match on Sunday. The pair of Ankita and Sania continued to dominate the match and won the first set easily 6-0. However, the Ukrainian pair later retaliated by defeating the Indian pair 6-0, 6-7 (8-10). Also, the pair’s Olympic campaign came to an end.
Mana Patel fails to qualify for semi-finals
Ahmedabad’s star swimmer Mana Patel’s Olympic debut has been disappointing. Mana Patel has failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the women’s 100m backstroke at the Tokyo Olympics. Mana Patel finished second in the heats. Of all the hits, the top-16 swimmers qualified for the semi-finals. 21-year-old Mana Patel finished second in Heat-1 with a timing of 1:05.20. Zimbabwe’s Donata Katai was three seconds behind at 1:02.20. Mana Patel could not surpass her personal best time. Mana Patel was ranked 39th among all hit swimmers.
Supposed to be eligible from university quota
Mana Patel qualified for the Tokyo Olympics through the university quota after failing to get an ‘A’ cut. Mana Patel hasn’t qualified for any other event which has ended the Olympics for her.
