Fox News host Sean Hannity offered harsh criticism of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnel (R-KY) on Wednesday after the Republican proposed a deal to Democrats in order to avert a potential U.S. debt default.
Hannity focused on McConnell’s statement and Democrats’ efforts to pass a proposed $3.5 trillion “human infrastructure” package that would significantly expand the social safety net.
He suggested that McConnell’s deal would throw a “lifeline” to Democrats as they fight to pass the spending bill Hannity described as a “multi-trillion dollar socialist agenda.”
“Radical Democrats on Capitol Hill—they have a brand new hero. With their multi-trillion-dollar socialist agenda now stalled in Congress, it appears it might be Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell throwing Democrats a lifeline,” Hannity said.
“In a backroom deal, apparently struck, according to reports, with [Senate Majority Leader] Chuck Schumer, McConnell is apparently thinking about or has agreed to a raising of the debt ceiling, giving Democrats more time to use what’s known as the process of reconciliation to ram through their $3.5 trillion new green deal socialist agenda,” he went on.
Hannity briefly explained the budget reconciliation process to his viewers and discussed the estimated date of U.S. debt default on October 18 and the possibility of raising the debt ceiling through reconciliation.
“Mitch McConnell needs to stop with this old, outdated Washington—these swamp ways of Washington. He should not lift a finger to help the socialist Democrats rob future generations blind because that’s what this bill will do. If you raise the debt ceiling, they’re gonna waste all of it and they’re gonna steal it from our children, our grandchildren and great-grandchildren,” Hannity said.
The debt limit is a legal limit on how much the federal government can owe to those who hold the country’s debt in the form of Treasury bonds, as well as money the government has borrowed from other federal accounts. It must be raised regularly so the U.S. can pay for expenses that have already been authorized by Congress and the president. It does not raise the national debt.
Hannity took aim at McConnell, saying: “Mitch McConnell, tonight, you need to stop being a swamp creature and if you want to be a conservative leader, you need to start acting like one. And if you can’t do that, you really do need to step aside ’cause God only knows what will happen in reconciliation.”
The Fox News host warned about the so-called “nuclear option” that allows a simple majority in the Senate to override a rule rather than the usual two-thirds majority. This has been used by both parties in the past in order to overcome the filibuster.
Hannity pointed out that Democratic Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema were opposed to the $3.5 trillion bill and suggested McConnell should not assist Democrats in trying to pass it in any way.
“This is the Democrats’ problem and people like Mitch McConnell, if you wanna be a conservative and you wanna be a leader, you need to stop being a hostage to scary government shutdown rhetoric,” Hannity said.
