Internet Supports Man Who Wants Brother-in-Law to Pay for GF’s Dress After Milk Prank

In a now-viral Reddit post, a man claimed that his sister’s husband “ruined” his girlfriend’s dress by throwing milk on it as a “prank.” The anonymous man, furious, demanded that his brother-in-law reimburse his girlfriend for the dress.

The poster’s sister and her husband said he was overreacting; however, online commenters have rushed to his defense.

In the popular Reddit forum “Am I The A**hole,” a man under the username u/NonTueWed3099 asked: “AITA [Am I the a**hole] for demanding my sister’s husband to pay for my girlfriend’s dress that he ruined at his wedding?” The post has received more than 14,000 votes and over 2,000 comments.

According to the poster, the prank took place at his sister and brother-in-law’s wedding reception.

“My [23M] sister [F26] recently got married to one of those ‘It’s just a prank, bro’ guys,” said the man in his post. “The guy is hysterical, he laughs at any and everything that he lays eyes on. He jokes, teases, makes fun and pulls very very nasty and cruel pranks all the time. It’s like he has no filter.

“Once he learned I was bringing my girlfriend who he teased/pranked a couple of times, he started making comments about pulling some funny pranks at the wedding,” the poster continued. “I told him I won’t react well and he can do with this info what he [will]. He just laughed me off…then I didn’t see him till the wedding.”

At the reception, the poster said that he and his girlfriend were approached by his sister’s husband, who was holding a glass of milk. After some back and forth, the groom threw a glass of milk on the poster’s girlfriend.

“My girlfriend was so shocked she froze,” the poster said. “He started laughing saying ‘gotcha.’ I was stunned then I asked [what] the hell he did that for.”

The brother-in-law blamed the poster’s girlfriend for being unable to take a joke, and so the couple left. The following day, the poster called his sister and demanded that her husband reimburse his girlfriend for the dress she had been wearing, which cost $320.

“He threw a fit saying it was just a prank and my sister said milk doesn’t ruin a dress and said an apology should do it but I said no and demanded he pay $320 after humiliating and getting my girlfriend wet and messy,” the poster continued.

“AITA?” he asked.

Milk can stain clothing, and can be a bit of a hassle to remove, The Spruce reported. This is because milk contains fat and protein that can “adhere to the fabric.”

A milk stain should be treated as soon as possible—the sooner the better—to ensure the garment isn’t ruined forever. The Spruce also reminded individuals not to use the dryer on an article of milk-stained clothing until they are certain the stain is gone.

“Drying will set the stain permanently,” The Spruce said.

Regardless of whether or not the dress really was ruined, commenters were quick to side with the poster.

“NTA [not the a**hole],” said u/CoderJoe1. “Visit him regularly and perform a costly prank at his expense each time until he relents, pays for the dress and begs you to stop ruining his stuff. It will be hilarious. Oops, I dumped a beer on your PS5. Gotcha!”

“NTA. Throwing milk on someone isn’t a prank,” added u/AdministrationThis77. “BIL [brother-in-law] is just an AH [a**hole] who gets off on upsetting people and humiliating them. Stand firm. If you marry anyone ever, I would strongly consider not inviting your wife and BIL.”

“Even if the dress can be repaired, your girlfriend had to stand around in a wet and messy dress. Requiring him to pay the $320 for damaging the dress is a way of punishing him for his wrongdoing,” replied u/DaniCapsFan. “NTA.”
