A Georgia couple has been charged with killing a 2-year-old girl while babysitting, authorities said.
Juan Martinez, 31, and Nancy Martinez, of Gainesville, were arrested early Monday in the death of Valeria Jordon Garfias, who suffered traumatic brain and internal injuries, according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said the married couple was watching the toddler Sunday at their home while her parents were at work.
The girl was rushed to a hospital Sunday afternoon before being airlifted to another facility in Atlanta, where she was pronounced dead.
Staffers at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Hospital notified investigators due to the nature of Valeria’s injuries, sheriff’s officials said.
The girl’s body has been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s crime lab. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, authorities said.
Juan Martinez was also charged with first-degree murder and cruelty to children. He is being held without bail. Hall County Sheriff’s Office
